Strange night last night. I almost got into a fight because I refused to serve a woman who was very obviously pregnant. It’s a strange argument once you break it down. I believe in freedom. I believe in a woman’s right to choose. I believe in drinking. I even believe that having children can be a good thing (not from experience yet). I also believe that I have the right to refuse service to anybody (legally true). I just have a hard time watching a pregnant woman smoke and drink. It’s her body, it’s her baby, but it’s my bar (when I’m tending it) and I just can’t be a part of what it is she’s doing. I’ve had some people agree with me, saying I did the right thing and I’ve had others tell me that it’s none of my fucking business and my job is to serve alcohol to those of legal age who want to buy it. Who knows? What I do know is that something within me can’t or won’t serve alcohol to a pregnant woman. I’m sure she’ll get it somewhere else and it’s not my problem. I guess that’s the sad fact for most of us…out of sight, out of mind. Only this time, it stuck in my mind. Any opinions out there?

hey, i think you definetly did the right thing. many people are guilty of acting upon feelings of one moment and dont consider what may happen in the future. hopefully when she went home she considered the consequences and decided to wait a couple more months for her drink, but what are we kidding, most people are stupid.

By the time a woman feels a buzz from alcohol, her baby is legally drunk and passed out. You did the right thing, Dude!

here is the irony -- What if she were to tell you, "I am going to have an abortion tomorrow, anyway. I need a drink. What difference will it make."

Now you have a problem to wrestle with. Is the baby a THING or is it a LIFE? If you support the right to CHOOSE then you should agree that she should also have the right to drink and smoke before she kills that THING. After all it is just a THING and she is going to CHOOSE to terminate tomorrow.

However, if she told you she WANTED to keep it, then you would CHOOSE to see it as a LIFE FORM and then want to protect it. Do you see the hypocrisy here? SHE gets to DETERMINE FOR YOU what is and is not life.

CONSIDER THIS: A woman is on the way to an abortion clinic to have an abortion. on the way there, she gets into a car accident and miscarries the child in the hospital. The very hospital where she was scheduled to have an abortion. the very same doctors who were going to take the life, are now struggling to save the life. Once she recovers, though without a child, she decides to sue the driver for a WRONGFUL DEATH claim.

So what is the ETHICAL issue here? Can she sue? Should she? The question hinges on WHO gets to decide what life is. In this RIGHT TO CHOOSE world, the WOMAN is allowed to decide if the LIFE is LIFE or if it is simply a thing. Now she can't have it both ways. Eithe r it is alive or it isn't.

Life shouldn't be in the eye of the beholder.

This is not directly related to your experience, but it highlights the paradox of CHOICE and our notion of RIGHTS to exercise dominion over living things on this earth by means of our CHOICES. And it highlights the nature of man's willingness to be self serving and situationally logical. It would seem to me that we need standards, not situational self serving laws. Either LIFE is sacred and we DONT have a death penalty and abortion OR it isn't and we dont care who kills whom. But to play both sides of this equation makes humans looks despicable, not because they are violent but rather because they are LIARS.

I have a woman in my restaurant now that is drinking wine and my server was uncomfortable serving her. He brought it up to me and my GM told me that our official statement on the issue is that it's a free country. What bullshit. If you want to kill your unborn child's braincells-do it at home. It really bugs me that some woman have no regard for the life that is in their hands. The GM's wife drank while she was pregnant-fuckin hippies so he's pissed that I would even think about cutting her off. I hate people.
